James Cameron is a film director, producer, screenwriter, editor, philanthropist and marine explorer, of Canadian origin and born on August 16, 1954.
The son of an electrical engineer, he started in cinema experimenting on his own with the creation of special effects after watching the film 2001 at the age of 15. Two years later he moved to California where he studied physics and literature, until he began working as an effects creator. After several works under the tutelage of Roger Corman, such as Galaxy of Terror (production design and second unit direction) and Escape from New York (direction of photography and visual effects), directed his first film, Piranha 2, where he also collaborated on the script.
But it would not be until 1984 that he would achieve success as writer and director of The Terminator, beginning a career as a box office director, with films such as Aliens, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, The Abyss, True Lies, and Titanic, which broke records for both budget and collection, being nominated for 14 Oscars and winning 11, including best picture and best director. His next big success was the film Avatar of 2009, with which he once again broke records, creating a new way of performing motion capture.
Always at the forefront of creating new visual effects technologies, he also worked as a documentary filmmaker with a special interest in the depths of the ocean. An activist in different social causes, he is known as a director who is difficult to work with his actors and committed to his vision. His next projects are several sequels to Avatar produced by 20th Century Studios.
