South Park is an American animated television series, created by Trey Parker and Matt Stone for the Comedy Central channel. The series is intended for an adult audience and is characterized by satirizing American society, current events and culture with black humor through the stories and surreal situations that happen to its protagonists: four children residing in a fictional town in Colorado called South Park. In 1999, a movie/musical of the series was made: South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut, due to the high audience it had in the second season of the series.

The dubbing of this series has had numerous changes in cast, studios and directors, even going through different countries. To better organize the information about dubbing, the article has been divided into different stages for easier understanding.

Technical data and distributions[]

<tabber> |-|First stage (1998-1999)= On August 28, 1998, the series premiered in Latin America through the pay channel Locomotion.

Dubbing studios[]

  • United States BVI Communications Inc.: The dubbing of the first seasons was carried out by this studio in Miami, Florida (United States). This was the dubbing broadcast on Locomotion, with which the series gained fame in Latin America. It is believed that in this study it doubled for about a season and a half. It should be noted that Cuban and Venezuelan idioms or expressions were used in this dubbing.[1]
  • United States Globecast Hero Productions: The rest of the episodes of the second season were recorded in this studio.
  • Mexico Audiomaster 3000: Due to the controversy over the lack of censorship of obscene language in the Miami dubbing, and to comply with national open broadcast standards; Another dubbing of seasons 1 and 2 was made shortly after in Mexico in this studio for a local channel. However, this almost completely lacked obscene language, commonly replacing it with Mexicanisms (several of which were exclusive to Mexico City); That was why this dubbing was not successful and was discontinued.

Dubbing direction[]

  • United States Rolando Felizola / VerĆ³nica Rivas / Isabel Viera: They were the room technicians at BVI Communications Inc., and they were also in charge to direct the dubbing of the series, since there were no artistic directors in that studio.
  • United States Emy Toledo: She directed the dubbing at the company Globecast Hero Productions.
  • Mexico Jorge Roig: He directed the Mexican dubbing at the Audiomaster 3000 studio.

  • While the Mexican dubbing of the series was characterized by the large number of Mexicanisms used and cultural references to Mexico, in the Miami dubbing localisms from all over Latin America were used, as well as several references understandable to Latin Americans in general, given that the dubbing actors were from different Latin American countries.
  • According to Ɓngel RodrĆ­guez (who directed the dubbing of the series between seasons 8 and 9), for the selection of the voices for the Miami dubbing of this stage, tests were carried out in " several countries" with the direct participation of the producers and creators of the series, taking into account the skills of the actors and the fidelity of their voices to emulate the psychological characteristics of the characters.
  • In the Miami dubbing of this stage, more obscene words were added than there were in the original version, which was probably the reason for its success.
  • In Spain the series premiered in 2000, and in its dubbing in seasons 1 and 2, instead of translating from English, they used the scripts from the first Miami dubbing of those seasons. In the following seasons (until season 6) they were based on both the English script and the Miami dubbing.
  • At the end of 2001 in Peru there was a large protest by dissatisfied users against the multinational cable provider TelefĆ³nica for eliminating the Locomotion channel from its programming. This protest was largely motivated because Locomotion was the only channel that transmitted the seasons 1 and 2 with Miami dubbing.
  • In the Mexican dubbing, Gerardo Reyero dubbed the character of Gerald with an Arabic accent.
  • In the Mexican dubbing, curse words such as "damn" and "shit" were rarely used, but with beeps.
  • In the Mexican dubbing, the voice of the actor who dubbed Ned Gerblansky was digitally altered to sound robotic, which is why it is unknown who the actor who dubbed him was.
    • However, in the episode The Mexican Staring Frog of Southern Sri Lanka during a flashback the character speaks with his normal voice and is dubbed by Alejandro MayĆ©n, so perhaps it was he who did it. folded.

|-|Second stage (2000-2006)= The dubbing of the series remained at the Globecast Hero Productions studio. However, starting with the third season, there were several changes in the cast, mainly due to Vivian Ruiz having difficulty providing the voices of Cartman and Kyle; and the retirement of Larry Villanueva, since he left to work in film in Los Angeles. Locomotion, which belonged to Hearst Corporation and Claxson Interactive Group, moved the dubbing of the series to the studio The Kitchen Inc. (a subsidiary of Claxson ) in season 6.[1]

  • As in the first stage, this dubbing also added many more obscene words than there were in the original version.
  • Because Miguel Paneke had difficulties singing, Patricia Azan dubbed Stan in the songs where the protagonists sang in unison (For example, "Fingerbang" and "Even a miracle needs a hand") .
  • Miguel Paneke was based on the character of MarĆ­a la del Barrio (played by ThalĆ­a) to voice Stan.
  • The studio The Kitchen Inc. (Miami) also dubs this series into Portuguese for Brazil.
  • Between 2007 (Central America feed) and 2011 (South America feed) MTV stopped airing the third season episode Rainforest Shmainforest due to a controversy over some of Cartman's comments about the people of Costa Rica. The censorship was lifted on May 1, 2012, after several modifications to the original script.
  • There are also some episodes from the sixth season that MTV initially broadcast normally, but then stopped broadcasting from 2007 onwards, and were not broadcast again until 2014. One of them, Red Sleigh Down was re-aired. be broadcast in December 2011.
  • Before leaving for Los Angeles, Larry Villanueva contacted Miguel Paneke to audition for Stan, finally being chosen.
  • In the Miami dubs of the first and second stages, the secondary character Pip; which in the original version was British, was dubbed with a typical Iberian accent. For that reason, the season 4 episode Pip (starring the character of the same name) was not dubbed in Latin America, and was simply broadcast with the Spanish dubbing.
  • In the fourth season episodes Cartman's Silly Hate Crime 2000 and A Very Crappy Christmas, and in the fifth season episode Cripple Fight, Clyde, Stan and Jimmy respectively imitate Cartman's voice (note that in the English version the four characters are played by Trey Parker). Those three loops were dubbed by Patricia Azan.
  • In the season eight episode The Passion of the Jew, the German phrase Wir mĆ¼ssen die Juden ausrotten! (Translation: We must exterminate the Jews!) was censored for various circumstances, replacing it with the phrase Wir mortin Juden auspodrididos[1]. The Latin Spanish version was the only one where this phrase was censored.
  • Until season 8 Antonio Delli traveled to Miami to record his dialogues for Herbert Garrison, in season 9 he recorded them from Venezuela in Audioline Studio.
  • The ninth season episode Free Willzyx was not initially broadcast in Latin America, possibly due to the way in which they characterized Mexico and its space station. The dubbing of this episode remained unpublished until 2012, with the launch of the Latin American channel Comedy Central, which broadcast the episode with its respective dubbing.

2010 redubbing[]

In 2010, two more episodes that MTV had not aired up to that point were dubbed, the fourth season episodes Timmy 2000 and Trapper Keeper. They were broadcast within season 14 to replace the unaired episodes 200 and 201, and like the seventh season redubbing they were broadcast as new episodes.

2011 redubbing[]

In 2011, MTV redubbed seasons 1 and 2 so that the voices in those seasons were the same as those at that time.

Since the tenth season, there was a very noticeable change in the dubbing of the series. As of that season, The Kitchen Inc. stopped doing Spanish dubbing for a while, and BVI Communications Inc. was left with the dubbing of the series. Voices[]

Because Sergio SƔez moved to Chicago and could no longer participate in the series, Larry Villanueva takes on the character of Stan and also takes on SƔez's other characters ( Butters and Stephen). The rest of the cast remained the same as in previous seasons, but there were voice changes in many secondary characters, because the studio staff only researched the voices of the main characters and some secondary characters, and did a casting to find new voices. for the other characters.

Until season 11, the character Kenny had not been dubbed, and instead his dialogue was kept in English. In the musical aspect, criticism began when in the episode Elementary School Musical of season 12, while in the English version the original actors did interpret their characters by singing, in the dubbing the actors inexplicably dubbing did not interpret their characters in the songs, the most notable case being the song "Do what you wanna do" at the end of the chapter, which is the one in which the four protagonists appear.

This was a decision by the owner of BVI, since the performers who dubbed the characters in said songs were friends of his. This decision continued until season 13.

Later, in the 2011 redubbing of seasons 1 and 2, the actors once again dubbed their respective characters in the songs, however this time the criticism was towards the adaptations of the lyrics.

Although Karina Lange adapted the songs in seasons 12 and 13, for unknown reasons in the 2011 dub the task fell into the hands of the studio translator, who had not been aware of it, and simply literally translated the songs, without metric adaptation.

In the same redubbing, for unknown reasons, in the episodes Chef's Chocolate Salty Balls and Gnomes in Mr. Hankey's songs and the Gnomes' songs, only the instrumental tracks were left without a singer. .

However, with the change to Studio Center, there was a notable improvement in the musical aspect, since the adaptations in the Broadway Bro Down episode greatly surpassed those of previous seasons.

Translation[]

In the season 10 episode, Smug Alert there was a notable adaptation error: in the original version the South Park characters become very arrogant and cause a large wave of smug (which in English means "arrogant" or "conceited"), which is a parody of smog. In the dub the word smug was not translated and was pronounced as "smog".

Likewise, many times titles from well-known franchises were translated into dubbing, even though neither in America nor in Spain does this happen with the real titles: as is the case of World of Warcraft translated into "The world of art of war", "Guitar Hero" translated to "Guitar Heroes", "High School Musical" translated to "High School Musical", or the song "Poker Face" translated to "Poker Face", among others, in addition to the fact that in the season 15 episode, You're Getting Old, Cartman is given a Ben 10 watch, and in the dubbing, its original pronunciation was said in English (Ben Ten), when in Latin America it is known for its Spanish pronunciation (Ben Diez).

In the first season episode Starvin' Marvin based on the character of the same name, it was translated in the original dub as Paco el flaco, but in the 2011 redubbing it was literally translated to Starving.

In the season 15 episode Ass Burgers, in the original version Cartman makes a pun between Asperger and ass burgers. In the dub, the first term was translated as "Anoperger", while the second was translated as "Ano burger". This caused several inconsistencies in the adaptation, especially when in the original version it is mentioned that Stan contracted Asperger's syndrome from a vaccine, but in the dubbing it was said that he contracted "Anoperger's". This was a serious mistake because the term "anus burger" was only invented by Cartman, to simulate a disease that he himself invented.

Consequences of the change of study[]

As already mentioned, the actors dubbed the second half of season 15 in Studio Center, while VSI Civisa paid them through a bank transfer. This situation generated many problems in dubbing, due to the constant delays in payments by Civisa and the great remoteness of the Studio Center from the actors houses.

Of the cast of 16 actors (not counting others whose names are unknown) that BVI had had in the previous batch of episodes, as well as in the last season, only 9 actors participated in the episodes recorded at Studio Center, the smallest number in the history of the dubbing of the series, which led to several character changes in the cast.

Eduardo Wasveiler and Anna Silvetti did not participate in those episodes because they were outside of Miami.

After the dubbing of the second half of season 15 and the redubbing of Rainforest Shmainforest, Larry Villanueva leaves the South Park dub for the second time due to the same reasons of the actors who left. They retired with the transition to Studio Center and their work in theater.
